Mr. Seward’s Course 1 Syllabus 2013-14


High School Requirements: to graduate you must pass two years of physical education.


Course Description:


Course 1, mostly 9th graders, consists of aquatic, rhythms/dance, and individual and dual activities. This is standard based, common core instruction that allows for students demonstrating knowledge of and competency in motor skills, movement patterns, and strategies needed to perform a variety of physical activities. It is fitness based instruction for health and performance while demonstrating knowledge of fitness concepts, principles and strategies. Finally, it allows students to demonstrate knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles and strategies that apply to learning and performance of physical activity.


Grading Policy: students receive 10 points a day.


The 10 points are for daily formative assessment. This part of the student grade is weighted @ 80% of their overall grade. (Examples, peer assessment, exercise logs, skill acquisition pre and post assessment, health related assessment pre and post fitness testing. Student’s projects, group work, etc).


Written work is weighted @ 10% of the student’s grade. (Daily journals, extra credit papers, exit tickets, self reflections)


Tests (summative) are weighted @ 10% of the student’s grade. (Unit knowledge tests and semester finals)



Extra Credit can be earned in the following manner:

  • Run laps around the track (1 pt per lap ran)
  • 1 page papers, front and back, hand written (10 pts per paper, a maximum of 3 papers per semester). The subject may consist of the student’s favorite sport, team, athlete, activity, health, nutrition, or anything agreed upon through discussion with Mr. Seward.



Physical Fitness Testing: all 9th graders and 10th graders who didn’t pass the fitness test will be required by the state, school district, and Oak Grove High School to take the California state fitness test. The test is administers in March.
