Associate Principal of Educational Development

Marco Menéndez

Marco Menendez is of Cuban and Puerto Rican decent and prides himself as being a life-long learner with an international perspective. His love of learning has enabled him to learn four languages, English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Italian, and to become passionate about continuously improving his approaches to teaching and learning.

Mr. Menendez has become addicted to exploring and experiencing a wide range of curriculum and pedagogy. Over the course of 10 years of teaching at nearly every grade level and a wide range of subjects from the social sciences and English to drama, music, and dance, he developed extensive experience in raising academic achievement and preparing students for success in higher education by using inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, and social-emotional learning in his teaching strategies.

This teaching experience, and the professional development that accompanied it, proved especially useful when Mr. Menendez transitioned from teaching to administration. As an administrator with 12 years of experience, he first served as a Head of School for three years for an international school serving K-12 students in China. After that, he wanted to explore higher education and served as a Dean of Liberal Arts and Student Life for a community college in Oakland, California for over six years. During that time, his wife and he also founded their own child daycare program in which he designed the curriculum and served as the business manager. While he enjoyed those experiences and learned a great deal about both higher education and early childhood education administration, he longed to return to K-12 international education. As a result, he returned to China and served as a principal for a new international primary school, which was his last position before joining the East Side Union High School District.

In his free time, Mr. Menendez enjoys astronomy, playing music, outdoor activities, watching FCBarcelona, and spending time with his family. His wife and he are raising their two boys to be trilingual and multicultural.
